Default which arts have you trained in?

Hi everyone,
I am not into MMA as a fighter but as an enthusiast.
I have had a lot of training in martial arts but not in terms of MMA.
I was curious about what styles most of you train in.
For me it was
Tae Kwan Do
Hapkido
Jujutsu
judo
and freestyle grappling

None. What would be a good beginner style to defend myself w/out having to shoot someone?

Man, the only thing between a "Mixed Martial Artest" and you, is they have worked on ways to put the arts you've gained experience in all together.
If you're comfortable with each one of those arts, and can put them together....you're probably further ahead of the game then a lot of people (including me, for sure...lol)

Example -
I took Tae Kwon Do when I was younger and then for some time several years ago.
I wrestled for a VERY short while in Jr High School (I WISH I had stuck with it at this point.
Then I started taking MMA classes and MT Kickboxing classes a while back.
I have a long way to go in my opinion and you sound like you have one heck of a foundation.

Depends on what you want to focus on first...ground or striking as well as what is available in your area.
If it were me, these are what I would look for.

Ground work - If you can find some place to do freestyle Wrestling...or a good BJJ school would be good as well.
Striking - MT Kickboxing, or strait boxing is what I would look for.

I started with boxing and wrestling. Then I moved on to Muay Thai, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu mixed with Judo. That was steady for a few years then I started to do some Wing Chun and Krav Maga classes. So I'm, I guess what you'd call, well rounded.

my problem is I am a bit out of practice, and having had back surgury to remove a ruptured disk any competition is out for me. But I would like to start training again and tie all my experience into a cohesive whole. I would thing MMA training would help with that.
----------------
On the best type of self defense training, I think if you start training with almost any fighting style you will improve you ability to defend yourself. Boxing is great, I think though that you would need to supplement it with other arts as it tends to focus on fighting within a rule based structure.
Combining that with a brazillian jujutsu and MT as CGC said would probably give you the most complete skill set if you can find all that training in one place.

you having back problems and all i would suggest jiu-jitsu. it requires you to stretch ALOT which can be very theraputic for the back muscles. i have a sciatic nerve problem and the stretching does wonders for me. helps build muscle to support the spine.

I have thought about getting back into martial arts in a limited way so as not to completly lose what I have learned. I would have to be very careful, since getting into fitness and weight lifting though I have had less issue with my back than any time in my life.

contrary to popular belief working out is actually good for you if its done right. UI used to wake up and my entire body be stiff and i didnt feel good but when i train and stretch i felt 100 times better.
